During 1966, Bud Bushnell established Genie Industries. At that time, he purchased the manufacturing rights to a material lift which functioned on compressed air. The name Genie originated from the "magic in the bottle" that was utilized to raise and lower the hoist. This device really impressed a lot of clients and hence, the name was born.



Genie has moved into many new markets, as the need for work platforms and lifts grew. Over time, as the requirements for new equipment to meet many applications grew, the company made itself known in many new markets. Like for instance, Genie went into manufacturing stick booms, telehandlers, light towers, man-lifts and articulated booms.



Because of the economic recession during the beginning of the 2000s, Genie decided to obtain a partner who held the same values. They partnered up along with Terex Corporation. This company has a history acquiring equipment manufacturers all over the globe who proved to be a good business match. Genie Industries was sold in 2002 and became a part of Terex Corporation.



Because of the Genie name and its solid reputation in the workplace, it was decided to maintain the Genie brand as part of the Terex Aerial Work Platforms. This was only decided after the first few years following the sale. Hence, all Genie machinery continue to be marketed under the Genie brand name.
