Forklift Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is supplied by large industrial batteries that have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety procedures should be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is very important to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area should be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the station must not be obstructed and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a charging area and battery. Never allow items like lighters or matches to be used while someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area correctly ventilated. The recharging process can release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
