There are healthy and safety regulations governing the utilization of forklift trucks. Any large machine, like a lift truck, is potentially dangerous and must be operated safely. The rules and regulations state that the driver must conduct daily inspections on the forklift and more thorough inspections every week and on a monthly basis. The following checks need to be done on the forklift:
Lift Truck Brakes - brakes on forklifts are important features that must be double and triple checked. A brake check is done with various pressures and pedal heights to determine the sensitivity of the brakes. The brake lights should be inspected at the same time.
The Tires - lift truck tires are also important for the safe performance of the forklift truck and to the braking system. All the tires have to be inspected correctly to make sure they are inflated to the right pressure and that there are no punctures in the tires.
Controller - the forklift controller system is checked by operating the forks and the release to know that the system is in good working order. Any indication of problems must be reported and tended to at once. The forklift must not be utilized until the controller system has been repaired.
Steering Wheel - To make certain that the turning of the wheel is right, the driver must inspect the forklift steering wheel. Forklift safety depends on the steering wheel responding well and working precisely. There are a variety of inspections which can be performed to determine the performance of the steering wheel.
Engine Oil - the engine oil needs to be checked by removing the dip stick from the forklift engine. The dipstick would show both the oil level and the oil color. The oil should be refilled if the level is too low. If the colour is off, there might be contamination occurring.
Fire Extinguisher - lift trucks are required by law to carry a fire extinguisher. This fire extinguisher will have to be checked to ensure it will work properly in the event of a fire. Different kinds of fire extinguisher should be inspected in specific ways. For instance, a dry chemical extinguisher must be shaken.
