Getting Aboard the Lift truck
Amongst the keys to maintaining operator safety is the 3-point dismount. Even if this is often ignored, it is a major problem in keeping operator's safe. For example, several years ago, at a forklift rally, a participator perfectly carried out the course at a forklift rally. At the end of his run, he was so thrilled, that he jumped off of his machine and completely forgot to make a 3-point dismount. The judges ended up docking marks from his overall score and he failed to win the competition.
The importance of dismounting and mounting lift trucks is a really serious factor to be included in training. Additionally, having operators wear their seatbelts could really save their lives in case of a tip-over. It is truly essential to understand that if the center of gravity of a loaded lift truck moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation can happen. Trained operators rarely ever run into a tip-over situation, however, it is really important that they are prepared for that risk in case it occurs.
Mount/Dismount
The importance of properly dismounting and mounting any type of forklift, including even a low platform pallet jack is vital to ensuring the driver stays safe. Far too many injuries occur when complacency happens around these machinery. Some of the serious situations include: Operator's catching their coveralls or loose clothing when dismounting and can end up falling and breaking their back. Sometimes, the driver can sprain or break an ankle when they step off of a lift truck. The driver could break an arm accidentally while falling and slipping off of the pallet jack. The operator could suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris when they are still hanging onto the handhold using one hand.
Having 3 points of contact is necessary when dismounting or mounting a lift truck in order to keep you safe. The 3 points can be obtained by 1 foot and 2 hands or by 2 feet and 1 hand.
