A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machine that is somewhat similar to a forklift. It allows the driver to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain items, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Usually, order pickers are operated by electricity. These type of equipment are mostly utilized in a warehouse setting. Most often they are used for transporting pallets and doing specific tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The operator of an order picker uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting that usually sits quite near the ground. The operator is able to direct the machine to go backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks could be raised to the required level which makes it convenient for the operator. Like for example, if the materials required, are situated on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then entire platform is capable of being raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, however, several businesses might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to put pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts could be used to finish these particular tasks at some companies instead.
